The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshalls Office (OSFM) wants to raise awareness about the importance of burn injuries during National Burn Awareness Week this week. According to national statistics from the American Burn Association registry, over 91,000 people were treated for burn-related injuries in hospitals in the year 2020. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says approximately every 30 seconds, someone in the U.S. sustains a burn injury serious enough to require treatment. Children, older adults and people with disabilities are especially at risk. Scald burns are the second leading cause of all burn injuries with fire being first.
