At least 77 pigs are dead after a semi-trailer accident that happened earlier this week in Cass County.

According to the Cass County Sheriff's Office the incident happened just after 3:30 p.m. on Monday, June 1, when a report was made about a single-vehicle rollover crash on State Rd 25, just west of US 35. The semi had been carrying 170 pigs to Tyson Fresh Meats pork processing plant near Logansport.

When first responders arrived at the scene they found a semi that was hauling the livestock on its side off the road.

A preliminary investigation on the crash revealed the driver was headed west on State Rd 25, when the semi made  “extensive contact” with the guardrail, which pushed the semi and trailer off the road and caused it to roll onto the passenger side.

The driver Kevin Mitchell, 36, of Hartford City, was able to exit the cab of the semi himself and was later transported to the local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It was determined 77 pigs, however, were killed during the crash. The Cass County Sheriff's Office reported alcohol was not considered to be a factor in the crash.

The roadways were closed for the next six hours for cleanup and the surviving pigs were taken to a separate location for evaluation.
